AR Series Recording Modes and Times
In order to offer the best option for every type of audio playback application, the AR series has a wide range of recording modes. These range from 24 bit, 48kHz linear recording for installations requiring the highest quality of audio; to several modes of Roland Digital Audio Coding that provide high quality audio and very long recording times.
The audio recorded by an AR unit has two basic parameters:
Sampling Rate or RDAC-GRADE
and Coding process or RDAC-MODE
The Sampling Rate, or RDAC-GRADE determines the frequency response of the recording.
Sampling Rates for an AR-3000:

The RDAC-MODE determines the bit resolution or coding of the recording. The RDAC process allows for very high quality sounds combined with small file sizes in cases where conservation of memory is important. Of course now that memory costs are so low, conserving memory is not as important as it once was!
Modes available for an AR-3000 recording:
RDAC-Mode (Signal processing method) |
H-Linear |
24 bit PCM linear recording |
Linear |
16 bit PCM linear recording |
RDAC Mode 3 |
Uses 2.5 times less space than Linear recording |
RDAC Mode 2 |
Uses 2.3 times less space than Linear recording |
RDAC Mode 1 |
Uses 4 times less space than Linear recording |

Normally you would use the higher rates of 48kHz, or 44.1kHz for music, sound effects or any audio that would benefit from broad frequency response. The lower sampling rates are typically used for voice announcements or in installations where the amplification system and speakers don’t supply greater fidelity. Here are some general settings that can be used as a guide for choosing your recording mode. Of course the best way to decide what mode and sampling rate is best for your application is to try different modes and see how your audio sounds using the playback equipment that will be used in the installation.
S-HIGH / H-LINEAR 24-bit / 48kHz recording
This would be used for high quality audio played back in installations with high fidelity speakers. It is higher than CD quality.
HIGH / LINEAR 16-bit / 44.1kHz audio
This is “CD Quality” audio.
LONG 1 / MODE 2 RDAC coding / 22.05kHz sampling rate
This combination would be perfect for announcements and voice recordings in environments with good speakers.
